The Eleventh Hour Interview & Lookbook
Having only launched her label, The Eleventh Hour, in October this year, we were amazed to see how refined and glamorous Anne Tu’s recent lookbook was. The talented designer recently took time out of her busy schedule to chat to us so we could find out the story behind her brand new label The Eleventh Hour and what she thinks will be the hottest trends this season.
After working for Kirrily Johnston for three years, and studying a Fashion Design course, Anne has finally been given the opportunity to go out on her own, develop her own collection and finally gain the credit she deserves. Her new collection titled ‘Modern Romance’ is feminine and chic, with an edge and is sure to be a favourite this season. We’re already in love.
Check out our interview with Anna, and make sure you have a look at her lookbook it’s to die for…
Name
Anne Tu
Label
The Eleventh Hour
What’s the story behind The Eleventh Hour?
I’ve always been interested in fashion, even at a young age. I have fond childhood memories of watching traditional Chinese opera with my grandfather. I never really understood the story line of the opera as a child, but I would sit for hours watching, fascinated by the beautiful costumes and head pieces.
This interest grew throughout the years and by high school I knew that I wanted to work in fashion. I studied Fashion Design at Sydney Institute of Tafe and upon graduating, started working for designer, Kirrily Johnston.
In 2008, I took some time off to travel overseas and see the world. I started working on The Eleventh Hour the year after I returned.
When did you first get your big break into the industry?
My first big break into the industry would definitely be landing a design role working for Kirrily Johnston. I worked with Kirrily for three years and designed over 7 collections with her. I’ve gained invaluable skills and experience under her guidance which has definitely helped me get to where I am now.
Describe your label
Modern, feminine clothing with an edge. The Eleventh Hour’s focus is on quality in design and workmanship, drawing on subtle details to make the garment distinctive. The pieces are designed and directional, but at the same time are wearable and will compliment your everyday wardrobe.
What do you think is your greatest achievement so far?
Taking the risk in starting my own label and creating my own path.
If you could have any model wear your designs, who would it be and why?
My current model obsession is Liu Wen so I would love to have her wear my designs. She’s stunning and I love that she doesn’t fall under the traditional concept of beauty. She has such a strong and modern look to her. I think she’d represent the label perfectly!
Fashion to me is…
A medium in which you can express yourself creatively. The thing that I love about fashion is that it is one of the simplest forms of self expression; you can convey your personality or even your mood without saying a word.
Describe your personal style…
Refined, minimal and never over the top. I would say that I take a relaxed approach to fashion and this can be accredited to growing up in Sydney.
I wear a lot of dresses and basic jersey pieces. In the warmer seasons, it’s practically all that I wear and in the colder months I tend to team it with leggings and layers.
If you could banish one fashion trend what would it be?
Jeggings. I don’t think that requires any further explanation!
What is the price range for your recent collection?
Price range for my recent collection starts at $160 and varies to $550.
What can we expect from you in the next 12 months?
I’ve just launched in October this year so my main focus is to increase awareness of my label and build on the brand.
My next focus will be to design Spring Summer 11/12, I already have a few designs and ideas that I want to play around with so I can’t wait to get started!
Where can we find your designs?
The complete collection is currently displayed and sold through The Eleventh Hour pop-up store at Gaffa Gallery on Clarence St, Sydney. This will run in the space for a month until the 24th of December. So if you’re in Sydney, definitely come by and have a look.
